An anecdote is a short incident about a particular person. It either fits the reputation or complicates it. Then you praise or blame. The reason has to be something the incident actually shows. A famous moral that could apply to anyone is a proverb, not a judgment of this person.
At a wedding, the best man said the groom once returned a wallet with the cash still in it, then invented three extra wallets for the laugh. The cash part was true. The rest was purchased applause.
